Defending the Democratic Process in California

As Chair of the California Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee in the state Legislature, I was shocked and dismayed to hear President Donald Trump continue to make irresponsible and unfounded allegations about widespread voter fraud in California.

State and county election administrators and other public officials – Republican and Democratic alike – have repeatedly warned that these false assertions undermine the public’s trust in our elections. If President Trump has evidence of widespread voter fraud, he should share it with election officials so that it can be investigated. In the absence of such evidence, however, I can only conclude that the President’s statements are nothing more than a transparent attempt to distract people from the fact that he lost the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes.

California will continue to hold free and fair elections to choose their elected officials under my watch. Any efforts to curb voting access through intimidation or to purge voter rolls of eligible citizens will be met with fierce resistance.

I look forward to working with my colleagues and Governor Brown to improving our democratic process.

Sincerely,

Evan Low
Chair, Committee on Elections and Redistricting
Assemblymember, 28th District

"I am honored that my colleagues have elected me as the next LGBT Caucus Chair and I thank Assemblymember Eggman for her leadership," said Assemblymember Evan Low. However, this past election serves as a reminder that much more work remains to be done. My colleagues and I are committed to doing everything in our power to ensure California remains a leader in advancing LGBT civil rights protections throughout our State and the nation."

Governor Signs Bill Banning California State-Funded Travel to States with New Anti-LGBT Laws

Sacramento – California Governor Jerry Brown today signed Assembly Bill (AB) 1887, authored by Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) and sponsored by Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. AB 1887 bans non-essential, state-funded travel by California state employees to North Carolina, Mississippi and other states that enact discriminatory laws after June, 2015.  It is similar to executive orders and local ordinances already in place in New York State, Baltimore, San Francisco and elsewhere. However, it expands on these executive orders because it applies to states that enact new anti-LGBT laws in the future.
