Legislature passes on-time budget for fifth consecutive year

SACRAMENTO –The California State Assembly passed its 2015-16 budget bill today with a 52-28 vote. Assembly Bill 93 is now on the desk of Governor Jerry Brown who will have 12 days to sign or veto the bill. Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Campbell) issued the following statement after the vote:

“This on-time, balanced budget will build our state’s reserves and pay down debt. It brings opportunities and much needed resources to working families such as the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income workers and restoration of Medi-Cal benefits and services that were cut in previous years. Most importantly, the budget shows our state’s reinvestment and commitment to education by increasing Cal Grant B funding to benefit Community College students, as well as additional funding for preK-12 programs, California State University and University of California. The budget is reflective of the values and priorities of our community and allows us to build a strong future for the people of California.”

SACRAMENTO – Thirteen bills authored by Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Campbell) successfully passed out of the Assembly ahead of last week’s house of origin deadline. Among freshmen Assembly members, Low ranked second in passing the most bills off of the floor.

“I am proud to have authored pieces of legislation that will help to improve California,” Low said. “I thank my colleagues from both sides of the aisle for supporting these measures and look forward to working with members of the Senate to ensure that these bills are brought to the Governor for his signature.”

AB 1100 will adjust fee to prepare title and summary

SACRAMENTO – In response to a proposed ballot measure that would legalize the murder of LGBT Californians, Assemblymembers Evan Low (D-Campbell) and Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) introduced AB 1100 today, which would increase the fee required to process a ballot initiative.

“We live in California, the cradle of direct democracy, but we also need a threshold for reasonableness. Amending laws and making statewide policy is not something that should be taken lightly,” Assemblymember Low said. “It’s been 72 years since we updated this aspect of the initiative process, this proposal is long overdue,” he added.
