(San Jose, CA) Assemblymember Evan Low honored Fremont Union High School District Board of Trustee Vice President Hung Wei as the 28th Assembly District’sWoman of the Year during the California Legislative Women’s Caucus Women’s History Month celebration at the State Capitol in Sacramento on March 9, 2015.
“Hung Wei has made a huge impact in our community as an education leader, champion for mental health issues in our schools, Rotary leader, and fundraiser for students and teachers. She stood out among the other very qualified women in our community. She is the perfect embodiment of this year’s Women’s History Month theme, Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives in our History. I am happy to recognize her with this award,” said Low.
Hung Wei is the Vice President of the Fremont-Union High School District Board of Trustees, and is serving in her third term on the Board.
Hung Wei has been a strong community volunteer, serving as President of the Cupertino Rotary Club, board member of the Northwest YMCA, co-chair of the 1st Annual Bridge to Health Run, donating her time to be an advisor for the Monta Vista High School student-run publication, Verdadera which focuses on student life and mental health, and volunteering for the Scrip & Auction Fundraising for Monta Vista Senior All-Night Party.
Hung is also a board member of the Fremont Union High School Foundation, which is a fundraising arm for the five high schools in the district. As a board member of the Asian-American Parent Association (AAPA), she is involved in providing mini-grants to high school teachers in the FUHSD and free seminars to parents.
During the annual Woman of the Year celebration, a woman from each Assembly District is honored in the State Capitol. This year’s honorees had brunch with members of the Legislature. Each honoree was introduced on the Assembly Floor and received a resolution honoring her accomplishments. The annual event has been a Capitol tradition since 1987 as a way to highlight the achievements of outstanding women throughout the state during Women’s History Month.
National Women’s History Month dates back to 1978, when the principle groups that make up the National Women’s History Project began working in affiliation with the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women.
