SACRAMENTO- Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) issued the following statement regarding the UCLA men’s basketball team’s decision to travel to Tennessee for the NCAA championship. Some reports have incorrectly assumed that the travel violated Assembly Bill 1887, which bans state-sponsored travel to states with anti-LGBT laws. The UCLA athletics department has confirmed that no state funds were used for the trip.
“I am disappointed by UCLA’s decision to travel to Tennessee for the NCAA game but they did not use public funds and therefore were not in violation of the law. However, boycotting the game would have been an opportunity for them to take a strong stance against Tennessee’s anti-LGBT legislation.
AB 1887’s intent is to ensure that the spending of our state money is in line with our state values."
