Assemblymember Low Praises Budget Passage Which Supports Working Families in California

Legislature passes on-time budget for sixth consecutive year

SACRAMENTO –The California State Assembly passed its 2016-17 budget bill today with a 52-27 vote. Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) issued the following statement after the vote:

“This on-time, balanced budget will strengthen our state’s rainy day fund and make critical investments in our infrastructure and social services. It brings opportunities and much needed resources to working families such as the repeal of the CalWORKs maximum family grant rule and the restoration of basic assistance to low income families after more than two decades. Most importantly, the budget shows our state’s reinvestment and commitment to child care, higher education and public safety. The budget is reflective of the values and priorities of our community and allows us to build a strong future for the people of California.”

In the coming days, several components of the budget will be passed including those outlined below:

Early Childhood Care and Education

  • Expands child care and early education funding in the coming year.
  • Increases rate paid to state-subsidized child care providers to support increase of yearly increase in minimum wage.
  • Repeals the maximum family grant rule that will provide much needed monetary aid for 130,000 children in 95,000 families

Increasing CSU & UC Funding

  • Provides for a one-time funding injection of $50 million in one-time funding, with $35 million going to assist in degree initiatives.
  • Provides for $20 million in one-time funding and an additional $18.5 million in ongoing funding to the UC system.

Public Safety

  • Provides $10 million for human trafficking prevention grants.
