San Jose, California- Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) honored Helen Chapman as Assembly District 28’s Woman of the Year in San Jose today. Ms. Chapman was recognized for her community leadership and over 25 years of volunteer work in the community.
“Helen Chapman has proven to be a tireless advocate for our community,” said Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley). “She deserves to be recognized for her tenacity and kindness and I hope her leadership serves as an inspiration for others.”
Helen Chapman is a San Jose leader, community business liaison, and civic organizer on various boards and organizations, fighting to improve and strengthen the city of San Jose. She has served as the Shasta/Hanchett Park Neighborhood Association President, where she worked to open parks and improve the neighborhood. She worked on The Alameda: A Plan for "The Beautiful Way" project, a twenty year effort to revitalize and calm The Alameda to encourage business growth and pedestrian walkability.
For sixteen years, Ms. Chapman served as a research specialist with SJUSD. During her tenure with SJUSD, she helped struggling students earn their diplomas and coordinated youth volunteer projects, building the foundation for community participation in the next generation. She mentors high school sophomores at Lincoln High School, and is currently working for San Jose City Councilmember Sergio Jimenez as a Policy and Legislative Advisor.
A former small-business owner and retired San Jose Unified School District research specialist, Ms. Chapman raised her two sons in the Shasta/Hanchett Park Neighborhood with her husband Dan.
